One of the four most important dates on the Celtic Wheel of the Year, today is as powerful as Imbolc and stands between Beltane & Samhain. You may not know about it because it is not hyped like the others, I don’t know why! The fact that it is easily dismissed makes it extra curious to me.
The veils are thin now too folks and why are we collectively ignoring that?
Doesn’t that seem suspect? A massive Sabbath blind spot? Maybe it has something to do with the themes, in a world that diminishes the power & importance of creativity?
Right in the heart of Leo season is the first harvest and a time of celebrating the bounty of the sun and the earth. Inspired ideas meets inspired action, marry and feed us all.
This is the experience of the crown & the root Chakra at once, The Cauldron of Warming, The Cauldron of Life. For more on the Cauldrons visit Cauldrons Three: A Journey through the Celtic Chakra Spiral
Of light and shadow, of all connections to past, present, and future… This is the reaping! Where oppositions meet to create and destroy! The Underworld and Upperworld converge in us and we are asked to meet ourselves in the space between.
Today we celebrate the creative and generative forces behind all manifestation!
Lugh
Lugh, a member of the deified Tuatha de Danaan of Ireland, represents the inspired Celtic imagination and was sort of an original renaissance man, having the skills and abilities of all men. He is represented by the sun and appears as radiant, strong, and capable. In some accounts, Lugh created Lughnasadh as a celebration of his foster mother Tailtiu who exhausted herself preparing the land for a bountiful harvest. In her book ‘Lugh’ Morgan Daimler writes of the Tailtiu story:
“It is highly likely that this incident had cosmogenical significance and it may reflect an older, now lost, creation story in which a goddess labours to shift entropy into civilization and sacrifices herself in the process.”
Lugh is the energy and action of labor and harvest and reminds us that we cannot labor without the gifts of the earth, the material world.
