Celtic Wheel of the Year Overview
The Wheel of the Year starts at Samhain on the last 3 days of October. November 1st is like the New Years Day of the Celtic Lunar Calendar and that is how we celebrate and understand it today. However, the ancients solar calendar would have had 13 months and the 3 days of Samhain were like leftover time, they did not belong to the year that had passed and were not yet the year that was to come. Liminal Time!!!
Autumn Equinox is not one of the primary sabbaths on the wheel, the primary Sabbaths are at the climax or apex of the seasons when the energies are at their most potent. The chief Sabbaths are Samhain October 31st, Imbolc February 2nd & Beltane May 1st, & Lughnasadh August 1st.
Fall Equinox it sits between Lughnasadh & Samhain on the calendar wheel and like Spring Equinox & Winter & Summer Solstices, represents the beginning of a season.
Summer is associated with the world above & winter with the world below, Autumn is the time of life transitioning to death, and Spring a time of death moving back to life.
Autumn Equinox
The beginning of the season of death and the decent into the Underworld, the realm of shadows & darkness. For the Celtic people the underworld was home to the ancestors and faerie folk so when the seasons of transition came it was a time to connect with the bones of the dead. Communication with spirits & beings of the Otherworld is much easier when the world is in-between.
Northern European peoples would have known long, cold, and dark winters. Autumn would have been a time of preparation for scarcer food supplies, shorter days, and more time indoors by the hearth.
The energy of autumn is industrious, a last blast of productive momentum before the sleep sets in. For that reason and others, Autumn is associated with tying up loose ends, releasing what you do not want to bring into the winter with you and making, finding, or harvesting what you will need.
